Many of us are observing the foundation and continued work of the Sacred Stone, Oceti Sakowin, and Rosebud Camps which were formed to show support for the Missouri River and all her tributaries from the Dakota Access Pipeline. We are also beginning to understand the reality of man-made earthquakes in fracking regions. While these issues have life and death consequences the visibility in the media is gravely lacking. Clarity is essential for issues like these our country faces as we move into 2017.
The large and relatively reliable news sources (Al Jazeera, BBC, NPR, PBS, Slate, Vox, The Atlantic, The Economist, The Economist, The Fiscal Times, The Hill, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post) have covered these stories, but environmental issues are a tiny subset of their vast scopes.
WE NEED MORE COVERAGE OF THE ISSUES THAT MATTER TO US THAN THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA IS OFFERING!
Smaller, more guerrilla operations like Fusion and NowThis! are successfully recording events and spreading information, even if their analysis is less rigorous. Unicorn Riot has done a commendable job of providing information and documentation to those of us who live thousands of miles away from these corporate crimes against humanity. They give us the information. We learn from it, we act on it, and we defend oppression. It’s through these smaller endeavors we find out how to hold everyone, including corporations, law enforcement, and our federal government, accountable. Minor news organizations help us to help make change happen.
VITAL WORK IS BEING DONE AND GOING UNNOTICED!
Local reporters put their survival at risk to get the truth out, so they need our help! We’re asking our SuitUp Nation members to get the word out and support these smaller news outlets! Turn off your TV and increase traffic on those websites. You can give them your YouTube views, podcast downloads, retweets, live streaming likes, and shares. When you increase the visibility of the media organization, you increase the visibility of the topics they cover! You can do this. First, read what they have to say. Make sure you believe that their coverage is worth supporting. Then, two excellent next steps are:
- following these organizations on your favored social media platform
- creating a bookmark file on your preferred internet browser so that you can conveniently and habitually visit their actual websites
- share their stories on social media
The following is a short list of small or local news organizations you may want to support
(And, as all of these would encourage, you can add your name to anti-DAPL petitions here.)
Ramifications of Fracking:
Above is an interesting and potentially useful chart on the reliability of news. You can find the maker’s musings here.
*There’s an interesting NYT article about this hundred-year-old newspaper, which is traditionally conservative but endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, which was a serious risk for them, financially. They have a good series covering the local negotiations surrounding brackish water.
