Call to Action: Let the Senate Committees Know

#WEAREWATCHING

We are watching the Senate Committee hearings for the Deconstruct-Departments-They’re-Supposed-to-Head Cabinet picks.

WHY THE RUSH?

The Senate is beginning the committee hearings for the Trump cabinet picks. However, if you’ve been watching the news, you’ll hear from Mitch McConnell and other Republicans that these hearings are being “rushed.”

Traditionally, there is a list of tasks and paperwork which need to be completed before the Committees meet. Back in 2009, Obama’s cabinet nominees filed all required paperwork before the committees began to meet. While the nominations didn’t move to the Senate floor until February, they were then all approved, except one, in a single day. That’s normal. Unfortunately, the current nominees have yet to be fully vetted by the FBI. Additionally, many have also not submitted their financial information or have not submitted other documents to the Office of Government Ethics. This is in direct opposition to the current practice that was spelled out by Senator Mitch McConnell in a 2009 letter to the Senate.  (You can read a transcript of the letter below.) Apparently, the rules set forth by the Ranking Member of the Republican party only apply to Democratic presidents’ nominees.

THIS PUSH FOR COMMITTEE MEETINGS ON CABINET MEMBERS WITHOUT PROPER VETTING IS UNACCEPTABLE!

“Under the 1978 Ethics in Government Act, presidential appointees requiring Senate confirmation must file financial and employment disclosures with the OGE, a process that Shaub said “is measured in weeks, not days.”

Four appointees have not yet filed disclosures with OGE, according to a Democratic Senate aide: Housing and Urban Development Secretary-designate Ben Carson, Education secretary pick Betsy DeVos, Homeland Security nominee Michael Kelly and Commerce secretary pick Wilbur Ross.

Kelly is scheduled to go before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Tuesday, while DeVos is slated to have her confirmation hearing Wednesday and hearings for Carson and Ross are expected to occur Thursday.

There are lots of phone numbers to call, and lots of committees involved. Dates seem to change, so keep your eye on who’s what where. Phone lines will fill up, so Twitter is a good source of letting McConnell @SenateMajLdr  or any of the Senators below know #WEAREWATCHING.  It’s critically important to call, particularly if one of your MOCs (members of Congress) are on this list.

IMPORTANT PHONE NUMBERS WE ALL SHOULD BE USING!

There are lots of phone scripts out there for each of the nominees, and while here is where you’ll find the official Senate Committee information, somebody put together this handy-dandy list.
