In his first press conference since July 2016, Trump hopes that we’ll blink at his statement that” The only one that cares about my tax returns are the reporters” Uhm. No. We do care. But apparently, we have to hashtag tweet it and get it to trend on Twitter before he’ll care. #TrumpTaxReturns #TrumpTaxes.
Presidents and Presidential candidates since the 70s have done so. Why? Because, as the Sunlight Foundation stated:
It’s also important to remember that unlike Congress, presidents are exempt from conflict-of-interest laws. This makes disclosure of income tax returns especially important to shed light on areas of possible conflicts of interest.
“I AM NOT A CROOK”
Releasing their tax information became a standard measure of transparency and accountability during the Nixon administration, because of (ooooo whoopsy! ) questions about charitable donations.
But, even Warren Buffett called Trump on his lie about the release being impacted by IRS audits.
WHAT #SUN MEMBERS CAN DO
This is gonna be a long-term campaign to keep this on the burner. It’s not about Trump, it’s about allowing the precedent to stand. Call your Senators and let them know You want Trump to submit his tax returns. Maybe set up a weekly reminder. Let them remember you care. This is also a fun one to get your feet wet if you’re new to Twitter!
You don’t even have to address Trump. Just tweet:
#IpayIcare #TrumpTaxReturns #TrumpTaxes @SenateMajLdr @SpeakerRyan @SenateDems.
(If you want to address Trump, you can using his “@” as well @realDonaldTrump)
These tweets will go out to all of Twitterverse as well as directly to Mitch McConnell (@SenateMajLdr), Paul Ryan (@SpeakerRyan), and all the Senate Democrats. Let ’em know you’re watching.
