CALL TO ACTION: Call the Fiscal Hawks About Their Budget

IF ETHICS DON’T MATTER

If you’re a blue dot in a red Red RED district, it can feel futile calling your Senators and Representatives. They’re following lock-step with the Trump agenda. They’re not speaking out about the rise in hate-filled speech. They haven’t pressed Trump for his taxes and don’t seem to care about the amount of foreign debt his companies have. They barely squeaked at the ham-handed implementation of the “Muslim ban.” Their eyes don’t even roll any longer when Conway or Spicer lie to the public (oh, excuse me, “alt-fact” the public). They’ve voted for DeVos, Sessions, Price, Pudzer, et al.  Even so, you have continued to call. You’ve shown up at the Town Hall meetings. And you’ve officially freaked some of them out.

You are, in fact, very important to the #Resistance.  You’re showing them that the Tea Party protests were a child’s tantrum. You’re demonstrating the #Resistance they can expect for the next four years.

YOU. HAVE. DONE. WELL.

MAYBE THE BUDGET WILL

Now we will show them how concerned we are with being fiscally conservative.  We’re all learning a lot about how our government works these days. As a constituent, you can ask that your Representative responds to your question.

MAKE THE CALL!

Call your Representative and Senators and ask them for a response.  Explain to them you want to know which Federal budget appropriation bill will cover Melania Trump’s continued stay in New York City.  Ask them what the costs are to taxpayers.  Let them know you’re interested in this budget item specifically.  If the staffer doesn’t have an immediate answer, explain you’d like a written response from your legislator.

While the final estimates are as yet unaccounted, it’s time to begin questioning the reduction in some cherished Federal programs such as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Endowment for the Arts against the rising costs of keeping Melania secure in Trump Tower of New York City or Eric Trump’s $97K security costs for his business trip to Uruguay.

City Hall said it’s still working with the Congressional delegation to get reimbursed for what it cost to protect the Trumps before the inauguration. Congress gave the city $7 million of the $35 million it spent.

BONUS POINTS

#SUN members get bonus points for calling the Representatives and Senators sitting on the Budget committees. Phone them too and let them know you’re concerned about the increase to the federal deficit because of Trump’s additional Secret Service costs with Melania’s choice to stay in New York. Why the money saved would be better used for the public good by funding the National Endowment for the Arts instead!
