TRACK THE BILLS
Bills introduced which kill beloved departments, bills which criminalize medically necessary procedures, bills which kill unions, bills coming up for votes without any notice, bills, bills, bills! A constituent can get whiplash tracking what’s happening when. It turns out that this is normal, but it is confusing – especially to those of us new to the process. Well, now there’s an app for that.
When you sign up at GovTrack.us you receive email alerts for legislation which affects or interests you. Then you have time to call your Senators or Representatives or the committees to let them know you are concerned, interested, etc.
As of this writing, there are a number of Bills introduced you might want to add:
1. HR 861 Terminate the Environmental Protection Agency*
2. HR 610 Vouchers for Public Education
3. HR 899 Terminate the Department of Education
4. HJR 69 Repeal Rule Protecting Wildlife
5. HR 370 Repeal Affordable Care Act
6. HR 354 Defund Planned Parenthood
7. HR 785 National Right to Work (this one ends unions)
8. HR 83 Mobilizing Against Sanctuary Cities Bill
9. HR 147 Criminalizing Abortion (“Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act”)
There is also GovTrack Insider for articles highlighted pieces of legislation such as “The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act would permanently extend the temporary ban on federal funding for abortions. The EACH Woman Act would repeal the ban.”
Once you create your account you can sign up to GET ALERTS. It is under the ADVANCED ALERTS
By typing the bill which interests you into the advanced alert
A page launches with a pop-up which asks you when you want your emails. It also has information about the bill as well as a prediction of passage at the bottom.
You will get updates when any bill is scheduled for debate in the week ahead by the House Majority Leader or in the day ahead according to the Senate Floor Schedule.
but don’t be surprised if you find there are no schedules announced for future weeks.
ANOTHER REASON TO GO ON TWITTER
Someone who called a Member of Congress (MoC) on a committee hearing legislation the person was interested in had the experience of being told by the staffer that the MoC “didn’t care what she thought as she was not a constituent.”
Well… advice when that happens: Tweet about it. Write down what you were told with the staffer’s name. We are concerned citizens. This is our government. These people are OUR public servants. Tweet about it.
