WEEKLY #sun GUIDE TO RESISTING TRUMP
MONDAY – MAKE YOUR PHONE A PART OF
YOUR RESISTANCE TOOLKIT
Phone calls to MOCs are an important component of any resistance toolkit. Lately, it seems that there are always more reasons to call our various representatives. One day we want to support certain actions, the next day we find it necessary to oppose certain nominees. The phone calls themselves are relatively easy to make, but if you don’t have your MOCs’ contact info saved in your phone, each call requires a few extra steps.
One easy solution is to add your senators and representatives to your contacts in your phone. Sure, you can do that manually, but there’s also an easier way.
Text your zip code to 520-200-2223
You’ll get an immediate response with all of your legislative contacts in an easy-to-save format
Call your MOCs, every day if necessary.
That’s it, you’re done, and your resistance tool kit is stronger and more useful than ever
Another way to beef up your phone’s capacity in your toolkit is to download the ACLU’s Mobile Justice app. The ACLU Mobile Justice app is an easy way to record and report interactions with law enforcement. All footage and reports submitted through this app will be sent immediately to your local ACLU affiliate.
Currently, the app is only available in 17 states plus Washington D.C. The app works slightly differently in each state, but the general idea is the same. If it isn’t available in your state, contact your local ACLU office and express your interest. They are working on developing the app for additional states, and your support can make a difference.
TUESDAY – READ A BOOK (OR TWO) WITH IDEAS FOR
YOUR RESISTANCE TOOL KIT
There are a lot of great ideas available for free online, but sometimes it’s more useful to turn to a book (or e-book) with guidelines or strategies for activists, protesters, resistors, or revolutionaries. Here are a few of the better ones that individuals and groups are turning to all over the country:
Indivisible Guide: Written by former congressional aides, this free pdf guide outlines how progressives can best leverage their voices and resources to get MOCs’ attention and pressure them to act by constituents’ wishes.
Blueprint for Revolution will teach you how to:
- make oppression backfire by playing your opponents’ strongest card against them
- identify the “almighty pillars of power” to shift the balance of control
- dream big, but start small: learn how to pick battles you can win
- listen to what people actually care to incorporate their needs into your revolutionary vision
- master the art of compromise to bring together even the most disparate groups
- recognize your allies and view your enemies as potential partners
- use humor to make yourself heard, defuse potentially violent situations, and “laugh your way to victory.”
Rules for Revolutionaries is a bold challenge to the political establishment and the “rules” that govern campaign strategy. This book tells the story of a breakthrough experiment conducted on the fringes of the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign.
Beautiful Trouble is a book, web toolbox and international network of artist-activist trainers whose mission is to make grassroots movements more creative and more effective.
WEDNESDAY – DOWNLOAD THE “TAKE ON HATE” TOOL KIT
The “Take On Hate With Action” Campaign started in 2014 to challenge the growing prejudice toward and misconceptions about Arab and Muslim Americans in the US. After the 2016 election, they saw the need to step up their efforts and involve more people at the grassroots level.
To that end, Take On Hate With Action (TAKE ON HATE) has developed a toolkit and made it available for free to the general public. This toolkit is designed to provide people with information and resources to help fight back against hate of all kinds.
Visit their website today to arm yourself with this toolkit. TAKE ON HATE is also in the process of developing an Emergency Action Tool Kit for use when sudden acts of hatred or violence spring up right in front of you. Bookmark their website, or better yet sign up for email updates, to obtain the Emergency Action Tool Kit as soon as it is available.
THURSDAY – ADD THE ACLU “KNOW YOUR RIGHTS” CARD TO
YOUR RESISTANCE TOOL KIT
The events of the past few weeks (months, years, decades) have made activists out of many of us. This is good! We all need to participate for our democratic processes to work.
But along with the peaceful protests, we’ve also seen and heard reports of police intervention at large gatherings, immigration agents prowling through courthouses, and travelers getting detained at airports. These stories can make us wary or even fearful of what to do if or when we get stopped by authorities. Under such stressful conditions, it can be easy to forget that we all have basic rights and that we are legally allowed to assert them.
Fortunately, the ACLU has provided a handy “Know Your Rights” card that we can print and put in our wallets, pockets, or phones. If you get stopped by authorities, you can pull out this card and read it as a simple way to assert your rights calmly and accurately.
Download your card via this link.
FRIDAY – ADD SELF-CARE TO YOUR RESISTANCE TOOL KIT
Let’s face it – resistance is hard work. It can take a lot of time, and also a lot of energy – physical, emotional and mental. To maintain the type of resistance we are likely to need over the next several months and years, it is important that we take care of ourselves. By investing time in self-nurturing activities, we can resist Trump without burning out.
But how do we accomplish this daunting task? Mirah Curzer has outlined some simple but effective ways that we can sustain ourselves as activists and as citizens. Take some time today to invest in YOU. We need you for the long haul, so if you aren’t already doing so, please find ways to take care of yourself today.
