TERRORIST ATTACK IN ISTANBUL
On New Year’s day, a gunman opened fire in Istanbul killing 39 people and injuring 69 others. It’s a senseless act of terrorism that has people feeling helpless and grieving the loss of so many lives.
HOW #SUN MEMBERS CAN HELP
Having an ocean between the countries leaves us with fewer options than we’d like. However, there are still a few things we hope our SuitUp Nation members can do, even if it’s just one thing on the list.
It’s going to take time for the people of Istanbul to heal and while they are we need to step up and show solidarity with the people of Turkey and all the families who lost loved ones.
The Turkish Red Crescent Society is trying to help families pick up the pieces after the brutality. You can help by donating to their cause.
You can donate directly to their mission by clicking here. It’s best to use a Google Chrome browser so you can automatically translate the page.
BE VOCAL ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Condemn the attack on innocent lives by showing your support of Istanbul and its people during this tough time. Shut down any anti-Muslim rhetoric you’ll inevitably see on your newsfeed in the weeks to follow.
Although the majority of our readers do not reside in Turkey, consider giving blood in honor of those victims. You can search for a local blood drive here.
“This attack is on the culture of tolerance, on the pluralism of Muslim countries that is represented in Istanbul.”
To better understand the motive behind this horrible tragedy, read Al Jazeera’s great article here.
DON’T GIVE PUBLICITY TO TERRORISTS
Too often terrorists are memorialized through the media’s use of their photos and videos – ultimately giving them the fame and attention they seek. This worldwide recognition perpetuates the idea that terrorism is an efficient method of sending “messages.” Try to avoid using or posting any media that uses the name or photo/video of the nightclub terrorist.
