NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY
FRIDAY, JAN. 27, 9 A.M. TO 5 P.M.
TO OPPOSE BETSY DEVOS NOMINATION
For Secretary of Education
President Trump picked Betsy DeVos as his choice to lead the U.S. Department of Education. DeVos meets wide criticism, so much so, that the Senate Democrats want another nomination hearing. The Washington Post reports that concerns over her potential conflicts of interest need to be investigated further. Consequently, Senate Democrats officially asked for a second vote, this time with a subcommittee.
DEVOS’ TRACK RECORD QUESTIONED
Another large concern is that the Michigan billionaire has no public school professional experience. Politico reports DeVos is a “GOP mega-donor.” The news outlet alleges DeVos appears confused about federal special education law.
ABOUT THOSE GRIZZLY BEARS
DeVos advocates for guns in schools. She went so far as to cite a Wyoming school with grizzly bears to bolster her position.
DEVOS WEAK ON RIGHTS AND PROTECTIONS FOR CAMPUS SEXUAL ASSAULT VICTIMS AND LGBT STUDENTS
The Guardian reports that Sen. Patty Murray of Washington lashed out at DeVos during her initial confirmation hearing.
“’I was not happy with how you talked about this issue when we met – but I am hopeful that you’ve learned more about it since then and are prepared to address it seriously.’
DeVos has not articulated her personal stance on the outgoing administration’s policies toward sexual assault on campus or transgender students.”
Change.org petition organizers are rallying opponents to call their Senators today between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The vote on DeVos vote on Tuesday, Jan. 31 before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pension. We have to get on the phone today and make them hear our voices!
Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and they will connect you to the office of your two Senators. You can also look up your lawmakers here and call their office direct.
WHAT TO SAY
“My name is [insert name here] and I’m calling to urge you to vote NO for Betsy Devos as the Secretary of Education. Due to her lack of public school experience, she isn’t a good enough choice to be in charge of our children’s futures. There are far better options and turning down this appointment will pave the way for a qualified candidate to take her place.”
