Call to Action: 5 Ways to Continue Momentum from the Women’s Marches

Millions of women, men, and children all over the world participated in peaceful protest marches on Saturday, January 21. Perhaps you were one of them. Whether you were able to march or not, these gatherings generated a tremendous amount of energy and motivation. We will need every ounce of that energy in the coming weeks, months and years. If you’re looking for simple ways to continue the momentum from the women’s marches and take action this week, we have five suggestions for you – one per day.

Before we get started, we’d like to give many thanks to our friend Jennifer Hofmann for some of the material in this week’s actions!

MONDAY

CONTINUE MOMENTUM IN FAVOR OF EDUCATION

Oppose the appointment of Betsy DeVos to Secretary of Education ASAP.
Even if you’ve already called and/or left a message, call again. If you get voicemail, leave a message.

First: Call Senate HELP Committee Chair, Lamar Alexander (R-TN) 202-224-4944

Second: Call HELP Committee Ranking Member, Patty Murray (D-WA) 202-224-2621

Third: Call your two senators. (Find yours here

Script: Hi! I am calling to oppose Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education.

Note: That’s really all you have to say. It’s even stronger if you include your name and state when you call your particular senators or representatives on an issue, but for these types of committees, it doesn’t matter which state you’re from – the committees make decisions that affect all of us.

TUESDAY

CONTINUE MOMENTUM IN SUPPORT OF EQUAL RIGHTS

Oppose Attorney General nominee Jeff Sessions

First: Call Senate Judiciary Committee Chair, Chuck Grassley (R-IA) 202-224-3744

Second: Call SJJC Ranking Member, Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) 202-224-3841

Third: Call your two senators local office (look up)

Script: Hi! I am calling to oppose Jeff Sessions for Attorney General.

Read the ACLU’s 7-point action plan and then choose which action you will take based on what you read.

WEDNESDAY

CONTINUE MOMENTUM AGAINST CORRUPTION

Sign the first two petitions on the new Whitehouse.gov website. (Incidentally, we’re happy to see the petition page–which Obama started–still on the site. Unfortunately, there have been several negative changes to the site, including the removal of pages related to LGBT rights and climate change.)

  1. Release tax returns
  2. Divest or put business interests in blind trust

THURSDAY

CONTINUE MOMENTUM IN SUPPORT OF PEACEFUL PROTEST

First, call your governor if you live in Michigan, Washington, Minnesota, North Dakota, or Iowa. These five states are proposing legislation that criminalizes peaceful protest

Next, also call your state representative if you live in the states above.

Then share: If you know anyone in the states above, ask them to call.

Script: I am a constituent calling to oppose new legislation that threatens my constitutional right to peacefully protest.

FRIDAY

CONTINUE MOMENTUM BY UNDERSTANDING THE “THREE D’s”

Prepare mentally: The next four years will be rough if you don’t understand how psychological manipulation works. However, you can protect yourself and stay one step ahead of the game. Using precise examples, this article by Bill Moyers shows you how to avoid falling prey to fear-based mind games. Moyers is a little intense for some people’s taste, but his information is stellar.
